and

Baby Oliver

This is Jon Paul and Casey’s story of their time in the NICU with Oliver and how their journey has led them here to create the Baby Oliver Project, to help all children and families touched by hospitalization.

Oliver was born 9 weeks early weighing in at 3 lbs. 11 oz. He would go on to spend 53 days in the Yale New Haven Hospital NICU. His stay was extended on multiple occasions due to drops in his oxygen levels as well as his heart rate. His first Father’s Day and 4th of July were spent in an isolette. Casey and Jon Paul were with him every day. Casey was there from the time she woke up to the time she had to leave to make dinner. All the while still returning most nights just to say goodnight to her sweet boy.

Thanks to the kindness of local small charitable organizations, they were provided with a no-charge parking pass and invited to social events for NICU parents. However, even with medical expenses aside their stay was still costly. They noted that parents are responsible for washing their baby’s laundry and providing their own food while in the hospital. One expensive yet necessary item Casey found herself attached to, quite literally, was her breast pump. These incredible machines help pumping mothers bring vital breast milk to their growing children. Having gone through this experience for themselves, they were inspired to help the families affected by the same difficulties they experienced. Which in turn lead them to feel compelled to bring that form of kindness to all children and their families, because every child deserves a fighting chance.
